Over 70% of hydrometeorological stations in Yemen are not operational, and early warnings rarely reach rural and displaced communities. Our $24.7 million investment, through The World Bank Group, will restore and modernise climate and water monitoring and strengthen multi-hazard early warning systems so that timely warnings reach at-risk communities in 9 priority basins, home to 9.2 million people in the country. #GCFB46 This is GCF’s first #climateaction project in Yemen 🇾🇪. For the past two years, GCF has been focused on one question: How do we deliver more climate impact with the resources entrusted to us? The answer has included faster project approvals, simpler accreditation, stronger country ownership—and now, more efficient balance-sheet management. A recent Board decision will create more than US$4 billion in additional capacity for climate investments imminently while preserving the Fund's risk profile and adaptation focus. And USD1.3 for climate action for every USD1 contributed moving forward. In my latest blog, I explain what changed, why it matters, and how this reform fits into GCF's broader transformation agenda.

Hydropower generates 98% of Tajikistan’s electricity, making it the backbone of the country’s energy system. But climate change is putting this vital resource under growing pressure, as retreating glaciers and increasingly unpredictable water flows threaten hydropower generation. Through a $50 million GCF investment, delivered with EBRD, the Government of Tajikistan 🇹🇯 rehabilitated and modernised the 60-year-old Qairokkum Hydropower Plant. The #climateaction project increased the plant’s capacity, strengthening the resilience and reliability of a critical renewable energy asset. The initiative was part of a broader partnership that brought together GCF, EBRD, CIF, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and other development partners to help secure Tajikistan’s climate-resilient energy future. Recognising the importance of hydropower across Central Asia, the project also strengthened climate risk management and enhanced regional cooperation on shared water resources. This landmark adaptation initiative is helping safeguard #energysecurity, build resilience to climate change, and support sustainable growth in Tajikistan and across the wider region.

Can equity capital unlock sustainable growth in the Mekong? GCF Climate Investment Associate Principal Myung Namkoong explains how our $50 million equity investment, facilitated via Deutsche Bank to Mekong Capital’s Mekong Earth Regeneration Fund (MERF), catalyses private sector equity capital to enable climate-resilient, low-emission growth through companies working in regenerative farming, agroforestry, and sustainable aquaculture in Lao PDR and Viet Nam. MERF is a blended-equity vehicle in which GCF commits both junior and senior equity to de-risk private capital, setting a replicable standard for climate agriculture funds in the Lower Mekong Region. Can rural communities shift from reacting to climate shocks to managing them? GCF Climate Investment Associate Salamat Erejepov shares how our $30 million #climateaction investment, through the World Food Programme, will improve the climate resilience, food security, and nutrition of vulnerable rural communities in Tajikistan. #GCFB45 The project shifts Tajikistan's response from reactive to proactive by turning its National Adaptation Plan into locally led, risk-informed investments at the district level, resulting in a pipeline of projects under District Adaptation Plans that can mobilise additional climate finance.
