Every peak plan covers the volume. Few cover who decides. Black Friday, 6 pm. Your main DC has hit its picking capacity. Three stores nearby still have staff and stock, but orders keep routing to the DC. Someone could fix this in ten minutes. The question is who. And whether they know it’s their job. The retailers who get through peak calmly do three things early: they test at real peak volume, they stop pushing changes weeks ahead, and they move their focus fully to operations. Peak rarely breaks because of one big outage. It breaks in small places nobody owns: a store count that’s off, a DC that’s full by lunchtime, a carrier delay that never reaches the checkout. Each one is manageable on its own. At Black Friday volume, they arrive together. Three questions to ask your team before Black Friday: 1. Does every exception type have a named owner? Stock, routing, carrier, system. 2. Is there a backlog threshold for rerouting orders, and a person who pulls that trigger? 3. Are your inventory updates real-time, including buffer logic? And do you check more than pure availability to avoid overselling? If the honest answer is “mostly”, count it as a no. We turned these and 17 more checks into a peak readiness stress test. The score is the least interesting part. The useful part: filling it out with ops, IT, customer service and logistics in one room, and seeing where your answers don’t match. BLUME2000 runs 370+ stores and an online shop that never closes. 💐 Fresh flowers don't leave room for guesswork on delivery dates. Their old monolithic platform did. We helped BLUME2000 move to a composable architecture with real-time inventory visibility and automated order routing, so delivery promises hold, even for perishable goods, up to 28 days out.
