Today, on #WorldFieldEpidemiologyDay, we are putting the spotlight on what field epidemiology looks like beyond the classroom. EPIET/PAE/FETP fellows Linda Adamíková and Antonia Genath have just returned from seven weeks in South Sudan, where they supported WHO with Ebola preparedness, including surveillance, data analysis and training. You may have heard it called “𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿-𝗴𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗵𝗼𝗲𝗮”. But what does that actually mean, and how worried should we be? In July, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) published a rapid risk assessment following an increase in ceftriaxone-resistant gonorrhoea in Europe. Resistant cases had previously been mostly sporadic and associated with travel, particularly to South-East Asia. Now, there is growing evidence of these strains also spreading locally in Europe. 𝗦𝗼, 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗘𝗖𝗗𝗖: 𝗢𝗻 𝗔𝗶𝗿 – 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗪𝗶𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿. ECDC's expert Otilia Mårdh explains how gonorrhoea develops resistance to antibiotics, what multidrug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant gonorrhoea actually mean, and whether we could reach a point where some infections become untreatable. The resistant cases addressed in our assessment were all successfully treated. However, keeping gonorrhoea treatable depends on detecting resistance early, using antibiotics appropriately, and preventing infections in the first place. 𝗘𝗨 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 (𝗘𝗨𝗥𝗟𝘀) for public health work with national laboratories across Europe to make testing more reliable and comparable, support surveillance, and help countries respond when outbreaks occur. In our ECDC: On Air podcast episode “A Network of Laboratory Excellence”, ECDC’s expert Andreas Hoefer and Rita Figueira from the European Commission’s DG SANTE explain how that cooperation works and why strong laboratory networks matter for public health across Europe. On World Patient Safety Day, we are highlighting a simple but essential part of safer healthcare: 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲. At Mater Dei Hospital - Malta’s main tertiary care hospital, ECDC’s hyFive app has been introduced to support hand hygiene monitoring in everyday clinical practice. In this video, the lead of infection prevention and control team, Professor Michael Borg explains how hyFive makes hand hygiene observations easier to record directly at ward level, saves time and supports clear, practical feedback to healthcare staff. Free to use and designed for day-to-day infection prevention work, hyFive helps healthcare facilities monitor hand hygiene compliance and turn observations into actionable information. Better monitoring. Better feedback. Safer care. Read more about the app here: https://bit.ly/474BEwW hashtag #WorldPatientSafetyDay #HandHygiene #InfectionPrevention #hyFive
