Put a gift in your app. Make $140 per thousand people who see it.

$140 CPM. Without showing a traditional ad. Having spent much of my career in ad monetization, that number definitely got my attention. At Pandora, I helped build an advertising business that grew to over $1 billion in annual revenue. More recently, I led advertising at VSCO. Two very different businesses, but the same fundamental challenge: how do you generate meaningful revenue from free users without compromising the experience that brought them to your app in the first place? It's always been a balancing act. That's why I've been interested in what Encore is doing. Instead of showing users another ad, apps can reward them with offers from brands like Amazon, Apple, Disney, and ClassPass. Come back to the app? Here's a gift. Hit an engagement milestone? Here's another. Users get something valuable, brands acquire new customers, and the app gets paid when someone takes an offer. Two apps using Encore, Wink (Post: https://lnkd.in/p/g7UW42B9) and Wayk (Post: https://lnkd.in/p/gSMh2JWN), recently reported CPMs above $140. Wayk also reported a slight improvement in retention. Those are compelling early results, particularly for a monetization experience designed to reward users rather than interrupt them. I've been advising Michael Gants and the Encore team, and I think they're onto something here. If you're responsible for monetizing a free user base, this is worth a look.
