What will make a car iconic in a digital world? When we talk about iconic cars, many of us immediately think about design. A distinctive silhouette. Unique proportions. A detail you recognize before you even see the badge. But iconic status is never created overnight. It develops over years, sometimes decades, as a car becomes connected to a certain time, a feeling or a memory. When I moved into the automotive industry in 2012, after more than ten years at Nokia, I was fascinated by cars such as the Audi quattro S1. Nokia had been an iconic brand in the mobile industry, and the quattro S1 represented that same kind of emotional recognition in automotive. But as more and more of the vehicle experience became defined by software, I started asking myself: Does this change what makes a car iconic? In 2019, this question became much more tangible when we started working with Sony, one of the world’s most recognizable technology brands. Sony had the ambition to develop a very different kind of vehicle, which eventually became AFEELA. The exterior and interior followed a minimalist design approach. But what made the project particularly exciting for me was the ambition to create a vehicle around the user experience. Together with Sony’s styling team, our teams at Elektrobit developed the first cockpit prototype and built the pillar-to-pillar display that became part of the final product design. We created the UX concept, implemented the full software stack, developed the electronic system and integrated everything to production-quality level. For me, AFEELA offers a possible answer to the question of what an iconic car could look like in the digital age. It is no longer only about the exterior. It is about how design, software and technology come together to create a coherent experience that feels intuitive, distinctive and human. Maybe the iconic cars of the future will still be remembered for their silhouette. But perhaps people will also remember how the cockpit made them feel, how naturally the vehicle interacted with them and how seamlessly the digital and physical worlds worked together. That is the challenge automotive brands are facing today: Software changes continuously, while iconic products need consistency, identity and time. At Elektrobit, we are working with our customers to connect these worlds and create digital experiences people might one day fall in love with. What do you think will define an iconic car ten or twenty years from now? #SDV #SoftwareDefinedVehicles #automotiveindustry #digitaltransformation
