Andy Sherman's new article in IAM is one of the clearest explanations I've seen for how SEP licensing is changing – and must change. Standardized technologies like video codecs increasingly generate value through streaming and other services. Yet licensing is still built mostly around devices. Andy explains why that gap matters (in video and beyond), and why Meta’s recent move to join Access Advance LLC's VDP pool is a big step in the right direction. Recommended for anyone who wants a glimpse of the future of standard essential patent licensing and its place in a modern intellectual property framework that fosters innovation and economic growth: https://lnkd.in/giTvYn4f

Some of the most important factories don’t make physical products. They produce innovation. A few weeks ago, I posted about USC Professor Jonathan Barnett's new paper on “idea factories” - firms that specialize in invention and work with others to incorporate their breakthroughs into products used around the world. That specialization makes idea factories more nimble, and better able to generate the disruptive innovations that sustain a dynamic, competitive economy. Dolby Laboratories, which sponsored the paper, is one example. On Wednesday, September 23, the Council for Innovation Promotion will host a discussion on what idea factories contribute, and the policies they need to thrive. The panel: Prof Barnett, Andrei Iancu, Coke Morgan Stewart, Kirti Gupta, and Safi Bahcall. Should be fascinating. Details below. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gSMBpJhB

Big news out of Meta Connect yesterday. Mark Zuckerberg announced Dolby Vision on Quest, adding to the existing support for Dolby Atmos, along with the new Horizon TV hub. Streaming partners like Disney+, Prime Video, and Peacock can deliver content in both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, immersing you in your favorite stories. I’ve seen enough launches to know that what looks like an overnight success usually involves years of late-night calls, extensive research and collaboration, and a few “are we really doing this?” moments. That passion, persistence, and trust are what made this partnership successful. What excites me most is where this heads next–native XR experiences. Think live concerts, sports, and cultural events that feel less like “watching from your couch” and more like being dropped into the front row without the $20 parking fee. For Dolby, expanding the ecosystem with our great partners is about shaping how people connect with the stories and experiences they care most about. #DolbyVision #DolbyAtmos #MetaConnect #ImmersiveTech #FutureOfEntertainment Dolby Laboratories
