🩺 Maternal positioning for a comfortable latch Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman runs through how maternal positioning supports a comfortable latch. Breastfeeding happens many times a day, so maternal comfort matters, particularly in the first few days when there may already be some pain or discomfort. 🔍 What to check when reviewing posture: ▫️ The mother is relaxed, with no tension in her back or shoulders ▫️ Pillows placed under the arms to support the baby's weight ▫️ No leaning forward towards the baby ▫️ The baby brought up to the breast, not the breast down to the baby Small adjustments to posture can reduce the back and shoulder strain associated with frequent feeding. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #InfantNutrition

🔔 Early hunger cues typically appear before crying Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman points to the hunger cues that come before crying, often while the baby is still asleep. Crying is a late cue: by then a baby is usually very hungry, and a calm latch can be harder to achieve. 🔍 Early hunger cues: ▸ Small movements and body tension ▸ Turning of the head ▸ Opening of the mouth ▸ Noises or smacking sounds ▸ The cheek test: touch the cheek, and a baby who turns towards it is likely ready to feed, even with eyes closed Feeding on demand also means being proactive. In the first days, if the baby sleeps for long periods or weight gain is slow, the mother can gently wake the baby and offer the breast. This can help establish demand and maintain milk supply. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #InfantNutrition

📈 Weight gain as an indicator of effective milk transfer Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman explains how weight gain can show that milk transfer is effective. Some weight loss in the first days after birth is expected, after which most babies begin gaining weight by around day five and gradually return to their birth weight. 🔍 Alongside weight, these signs suggest milk transfer is effective: 🔸 Around 8 to 12 feeds in 24 hours 🔸 Audible swallowing during the feed 🔸 The baby releases the breast on their own 🔸 Regular soiled diapers 🔸 Birth weight typically doubled by four to six months, tripled by one year A baby who rarely releases the breast and feeds almost continuously warrants a check of whether milk transfer is effective. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #InfantNutrition

📌 Four breastfeeding positions and when to use each Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman goes through the most common breastfeeding positions and what each one is best suited to. 🔍 Four most common positions: ‣ Cradle hold: the most commonly used position ‣ Cross-cradle: for a deeper latch, or cracked nipples ‣ Rugby hold: after a caesarean, prematurity, or twins ‣ Side-lying: for rest once feeding is established Whichever position is used, Vicki explains, the principles stay the same: ear, shoulder and hip aligned, and the baby brought to the breast rather than the other way around. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #InfantNutrition

✅ Recognising the features of a good latch Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman shows how to recognise a good latch. A good latch is essential for effective milk transfer, helping the baby get the milk they need and preventing problems for the mother. Positioning may need to be adapted to the mother's breast anatomy. 🔍 Key signs of a good latch: ➤ The baby's mouth is wide open, taking in as much of the areola as possible ➤ More areola is visible above the upper lip than below the lower lip ➤ The lips are flanged outward, creating a deep latch ➤ The baby's nose and chin are touching the breast Why it matters, as Vicki explains: milk is released by compressing the areola, not the nipple. A small mouth that only grasps the nipple creates a shallow latch and poor milk transfer. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #Midwifery #InfantNutrition #HCP

📋 What does diaper output indicate about milk intake? Breastfeeding offers important health benefits for both mothers and infants, and the support provided by healthcare professionals can make a meaningful difference. In this clip from our nine-part video series, Registered Midwife and Breastfeeding Educator Vicki Blackman looks at what diaper output can tell you about milk intake. As she explains, stool and urine output are among the simplest indicators that breastfeeding is working, and reduced output may point to insufficient intake. 🔍 What to look for: ▪️ First few days: one or two wet diapers with clear urine ▪️ Pink urate crystals are common in the colostrum phase ▪️ By day three or four, when milk comes in, those spots should disappear ▪️ From then on: five to six wet diapers in 24 hours, pale urine that doesn't stain ▪️ Fewer than two stools per day may indicate low intake Very few bowel movements in the first 15 days to one month warrants a weight check. ➡️ Watch the full video on DNC: https://lnkd.in/eZQ4ggsj Exclusively for #HealthcareProfessional use only. #Breastfeeding #Lactation #InfantNutrition
