Resilient food systems are built on options. Weather, markets, equipment, logistics and regulations will continue to change. Food systems cannot eliminate uncertainty, but they can become better prepared to respond to it. That means identifying risks earlier, testing alternatives, diversifying supply and maintaining enough flexibility to adapt when conditions change. This was a central theme in my conversations at the World Agri-Tech and Future Food-Tech conferences in London last week. Technology can support resilience when it improves a decision that matters to the people doing the work. At Cargill’s Amsterdam Multiseed facility, Spot — the autonomous robotic dog developed with bostondynamics. — carries out approximately 10,000 inspections each week, helping teams identify issues such as overheating, leaks and equipment faults earlier. But the value is not the robot itself. It is the earlier visibility, better information and ability to act before a problem becomes a failure. The same principle applies across the wider food system: innovation should help farmers, customers, operators and supply-chain teams detect risk earlier, test alternatives and make better decisions while there is still time to act. #FoodSystems #Resilience #Innovation #Technology #Agriculture #FoodTech

For generations, agriculture’s defining challenge was producing more food. Today, the challenge is more complex: helping food reach people in the right way, at the right time, through systems under pressure. In Cargill’s 2026 Annual Report, Grow forward, Brian Sikes, Board Chair and CEO, explores what this next era of food and agriculture requires: smarter movement, stronger connections, deeper trust and practical innovation across the supply chain.

The hardest part of food innovation often starts after the breakthrough. This week at FoodDrinkEurope's #IdeasFest, I joined Oscar Goddijn of Avansya and Robert Lowery of PepsiCo for a discussion moderated by René Berendse of EIT Food on what it takes to move food innovation from promising concept to real-world application. The science may be strong. The first trials may work. Customers may see the potential. Then come the questions that decide whether an idea can scale: production, regulation, supply chains, formulation, affordability and consumer trust. Europe has many of the ingredients to lead. The opportunity now is to connect them more effectively. I have shared my reflections here. #FoodInnovation #Innovation #ScaleUp #FoodSystems #Europe #Collaboration #RandD #Cargill
