Cybersecurity has become a core priority for the HVAC/R sector. These systems are essential for comfort, safety, and critical infrastructure, and vulnerabilities can lead to consequences that extend well beyond data breaches. Over the past two decades, the European Union has developed a strong cybersecurity framework, including ENISA, the Cybersecurity Act, the Cyber Resilience Act, NIS2, and the Radio Equipment Directive. Together, these measures aim to protect digital products and connected systems, setting clear obligations for manufacturers and service providers. In her new blog post, Miriam Solana Ciprés, Technical Knowledge Manager at CAREL, explores how these initiatives affect the HVAC/R sector and why cybersecurity must be treated as a shared responsibility. One alarm identifies an event. Alarm history can reveal a pattern. By analysing alarms from refrigeration, HVAC, lighting and energy monitoring systems, recurring critical issues can be distinguished from isolated events that require immediate attention. This can support more targeted corrective actions, reducing response times and unscheduled maintenance. For multi-site food retailers, looking beyond individual alarms can provide a clearer view of what requires attention across the store network. In food retail, knowing where energy is consumed is the first step towards improving efficiency. Refrigeration accounts for 52% of electricity consumption in an average European supermarket, compared with 20% for lighting and 9% for air conditioning and ventilation. For retailers, this makes refrigeration a key area to focus on when looking for opportunities to optimise energy use. The challenge is to improve performance while maintaining the conditions required for food quality and safety. AI can make data analysis faster, but expertise remains essential to turn insights into the right decisions. In the application analysed by CAREL, AI reduced the time spent pre-analysing data from multiple stores by 50%, while also supporting scalability and the identification of anomalies and optimisation opportunities. By automating repetitive analytical tasks, AI allows specialists to focus on strategic decisions, while human expertise remains central to setting up, supervising and fine-tuning optimisation activities. More insights on AI-supported optimisation in food retail are available in CAREL’s white paper: https://lnkd.in/e2AjWXcz

Cybersecurity is becoming a governance priority for manufacturers operating in the HVAC/R sector. The Cyber Resilience Act establishes a structured regulatory framework that directly impacts product strategy and operational processes. In her latest blog post, Miriam Solana Ciprés, Technical Knowledge Manager at CAREL, examines how organisations can navigate CRA requirements, from compliance pathways to ongoing vulnerability management. Improving energy efficiency does not only mean replacing existing equipment. Many food retail stores already have good basic automation infrastructures that are not being used to their full potential. Optimising control logic, configurations and system parameters can help reduce energy consumption and operating costs with limited investment. The key is making systems respond more intelligently to real operating conditions, from variable loads and opening hours to seasonality and outside temperatures. More insights on optimising energy consumption in food retail stores are available in CAREL’s white paper: https://lnkd.in/e2AjWXcz
