Putting two portable classrooms on school grounds is one thing. Connecting them to the systems everyone relies on is another. For school boards and facilities teams, adding learning space means thinking beyond electrical power. Announcements need to reach students, security needs to extend beyond the main building, and fire alarm systems need to account for the additional classrooms. All of that has to work with the infrastructure already in place. At Beckwith Public School near Carleton Place, our team provided electrical engineering for two new portable classrooms. The design included underground power and communications connections, along with integration into the school's existing fire alarm system. It also addressed public address, data, wireless communications and security requirements, helping the new spaces become part of the wider school environment.

University renovations don't happen in isolation. While one area changes to meet new teaching needs, the rest of the building still has to support the people using it. For campus facilities teams, that means designing around existing infrastructure, coordinating new requirements, and planning construction with ongoing operations in mind. Mechanical and electrical systems need to support the new spaces without overlooking the needs of the surrounding building. At Western University's Social Science Centre, our team designed mechanical and electrical updates for the conversion of fourth-floor offices into classrooms, a seminar room, and breakout spaces. Our work included coordination with Western's IT team and requirements for phased construction and advance notice of system downtime.

Campus dining is an important part of the student experience, but there's a lot happening behind the scenes. Every meal served depends on ventilation, plumbing, electrical power and life safety systems working together. For university facilities teams, food-service spaces bring their own engineering challenges. Changes to kitchen equipment or serving layouts can affect electrical loads, exhaust requirements, plumbing connections and even roof penetrations. Keeping everything coordinated takes careful planning and communication across disciplines. At the University of Windsor's Rodzik Dining Hall, our team provided mechanical and electrical engineering for the kitchen and dining fit-up within the new student residence. Having also worked on the base-building design, we developed the kitchen ventilation, exhaust, plumbing, power, lighting and life safety systems. As equipment requirements evolved, we coordinated design revisions, including specialized venting for the pizza oven.

Every school entrance has to strike a balance. It should be easy for people to use, while still supporting secure access and the building's life safety systems. For school boards and facilities teams, that means thinking beyond the doors themselves. Automatic operators, push buttons, card readers, intercom connections and magnetic door holds all need careful coordination with the building's existing infrastructure. At St. Anne French Immersion Catholic Elementary School in Windsor, our team provided electrical design for accessibility upgrades to two vestibule entrances. The work addressed barrier-free entry, security and connections to the existing fire alarm system. A September 2026 field review confirmed that the new exterior door operator, card reader and magnetic door holds were functioning as intended.

Some of the hardest-working parts of a theatre are the ones the audience never sees. Stage lifts, rigging equipment and lighting controls all depend on electrical systems that have to work together. For campus facilities teams, renovating a performance space means integrating specialized equipment with infrastructure that's already in place. Electrical distribution, equipment power and coordination with theatre specialists all need attention before the curtain rises. At Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, our team developed electrical designs for the Theatre Auditorium renovation. The work included power for a retractable stage extension, motorized rigging winches and a new theatrical dimming system, along with changes to existing electrical distribution and coordination with the theatre consultant.

A schoolwide HVAC upgrade involves much more than replacing equipment on the roof. New ventilation systems need room for ductwork, dependable electrical power, and controls that work with the rest of the building. For school boards and facilities teams, that means coordinating work around existing infrastructure while keeping long-term operation and maintenance in mind. Energy recovery, building automation, and careful attention to installation details all play a role in getting the design right. At Elginburg Public School, our team provided mechanical and electrical engineering for three new rooftop air-handling systems serving the first floor, second floor, and gymnasium. The work also included energy recovery, building automation modifications, an electrical service upgrade, and lighting improvements. During construction, our team worked with the Limestone District School Board and project partners to identify installation concerns and follow up on corrective work.
