I often speak with companies that are deeply committed to their SBTi targets. They are reducing emissions, optimizing operations, changing processes, and investing heavily to bring their carbon footprint down. And still, many reach a point where they have to acknowledge that some emissions simply can’t be eliminated — at least not yet. This is where CDR credits start to make strategic sense. Not as a shortcut. Not as an excuse to avoid reductions. But as a tool to address the residual emissions that will inevitably remain on the path to net zero. To me, it’s really about what companies can achieve with them: the ability to document a real climate contribution, strengthen credibility in climate reporting, and take responsibility even where solutions are still evolving. Contribution claims can also help accelerate the development of the very carbon removal technologies we will need globally. Put emissions reductions at the core of your strategy. Be transparent about what remains. And use carbon removal alongside — not instead of — cutting emissions. I’m curious: How are you approaching residual emissions in your own net-zero journey?

One thing I've learned about carbon removal: The biggest challenge isn't technology. It's demand. That's why I'm excited to share that Nykredit– one of the largest banks in Denmark - has purchased carbon removal credits from Bigadan through Klimate as part of a new four-year agreement. This transaction is more than a sale. It reflects a growing recognition that net zero is not only about reducing emissions, but also about addressing the residual emissions that cannot yet be eliminated. Nykredit has set a target to reduce operational emissions by 85% by 2030. Alongside that, they are investing in durable carbon removal to address their residual emissions. The credits come from one Bigadan's biogas plants, where biogenic CO₂ is captured and thereafter permanently stored. This investment also helps build the Danish carbon removal industry that will be needed at scale in the years ahead. The carbon removal market is still early. Every transaction matters — not just for the tonnes removed, but for the demand signal it sends to developers, financiers, and the broader ecosystem. That's how climate technologies move from promise to infrastructure. A big thank you to the teams at Nykredit and Klimate for making this collaboration possible. #CarbonRemoval #CDR #BECCS #NetZero #ClimateAction #CarbonCapture #Sustainability

Several people take the view that the use of CDR credits is merely an excuse to avoid addressing the root cause – eliminating emissions. To be honest, I understand the skepticism. If carbon removal is used the wrong way, that risk is real. But from a commercial and strategic perspective, the conversation is shifting. The question for companies with ambitious climate targets is increasingly this: How do you secure credible solutions for the emissions you cannot eliminate in time? For many SBTi-aligned companies, carbon removal is becoming part of risk management, compliance, and long-term competitiveness. Investors, customers, and regulators are asking for evidence — not just intentions. That makes quality, transparency, and infrastructure across the entire value chain critical. Can CO₂ be traced from capture to permanent storage? Is the infrastructure secure and scalable? Is the certification robust enough that you can confidently stand behind your reporting years from now? This is where transparency becomes business-critical — not just climate-critical. Reduction always comes first. But carbon removal is increasingly a necessary complement. And the earlier companies approach it strategically, the stronger their position will be — both climate-wise and commercially. How are you future-proofing your climate strategy today?
