As engineering teams grow, they can accomplish more overall while becoming slower at almost every individual task. In some ways, the most efficient development team is a single developer. They can hold the entire project in their head, make their own decisions and move without coordinating with anyone else. Of course, one person can only build so much. Larger products require larger teams, and larger teams require more communication, more organization and eventually more process. That creates a trade-off. The organization can accomplish much more overall, but each individual piece of work may take longer because it now needs to move through dependencies, approvals and coordination points that didn’t exist before. ⚙️ A decision that once happened instantly may now depend on someone from another team – and if that person is unavailable, the work waits. That doesn’t mean the process is inherently bad. It’s one of the things that allows larger teams to function. But leaders need to recognize what comes with scale. The goal isn’t to preserve the speed of a one-person team indefinitely. It’s to make sure the additional coordination is buying you enough additional capability to justify the cost.

If your engineering team is growing but output isn’t increasing with it, adding more people may not be the answer. Instead, it’s about accomplishing more with the resources you have – ideally by using those people more effectively. That usually means breaking large pieces of work into smaller ones, making sure everyone understands their role and reducing the amount of effort spent working out who should be doing what as the project moves forward. AI can help here too. Repetitive work that consumes time but doesn’t need much creativity can increasingly be handled by AI, leaving people with more capacity for the work that actually needs their judgement. What tends not to work is simply adding more people. 👥 If roles are unclear and the underlying work isn’t properly structured, more developers can mean more overlap, more communication and more confusion. Scaling effectively isn’t about throwing additional bodies at a problem. It’s about creating a system where the people you already have can contribute more effectively – and knowing exactly where additional capacity will genuinely help.
